Changing Channels – Slow Scanning waves of perception
This presentation will examine the Electromagnetic Spectrum, a scientific chart used to understand the relationship between different types of energy waves, and how it can be used as an instrument to explore and expand upon media based art practices. I will specifically discuss how Slow Scan Television, an early telecommunications technology is an example of how the manipulation of energy waves can act as a metaphor to explore ones constructs of perception and relationship within the world.

By examining how this early video technology is able to translate audio waves into visual information, I will discuss how Slow Scan Television as a technological device has been used and continues to be explored by artists and engineers investigating the use of media in art. The relationship between an individual and the tools, instruments and devices they employ to engage with the properties of their physical environment will also be examined as a site of interaction between the detection of physical properties and the interpretation and imagination of these phenomena.

Media History documents will be presented along with contemporary projects to illustrate how different ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum have been explored and continue to be investigated challenging understanding and experience of the earths environment.

Keywords: Electromagnetic Spectrum, Slow Scan Television, telecommunications, audio, video, perception
