Jim Andrews
Andrews is a net artist, writer, programmer, and audio guy. He has
published vispo.com since 1995. It is the centre of his work as an artist.
For better or worse, he has taken the Web seriously as artistic media and
has attempted to create a Web site that integrates writing, audio,
programming, and visual art.

Sound and Vision - Audio on the Net
Laurel Point Inn
1 pm, Saturday January 28th
Let us define interactive audio over the Internet as the set of applications
in which the audience interacts with the audio and the applications are
available for download over the Internet and execute either in a browser or
standalone. This class of art apps pose many possibilities. Such as
different ways to experience audio; new forms of music specific to the
Internet experience; and new ways to collaborate or jam over the Net. We
have seen the Net change the business of music via things like file-sharing.
But we haven't seen/heard much change in music or audio itself as a result
specifically of Net possibilities. This presentation will explore some of
the artistic possibilities posed by the Net and look at a variety of
interactive audio apps for the Net.
Tangible Frequencies - Nio & War Pigs
Open Space
7:30 pm, Thursday January 26th [ongoing]
NIO
http://vispo.com/nio
Nio is a web-based work of interactive audio. It's a mix of music, sound
poetry, and visual poetry that invites the player to create a little
composition from the sixteen audio recordings in it. There are two 'verses'
to Nio. In 'verse one', you play with layers of audio and visuals. In verse
two, you play with synchronized layers and sequences of audio and visuals.
It's a little sequencer. Additional to the Shockwave piece itself are other
components to the Nio project such as an essay on the poetics of interactive
audio for the Web and tech notes on audio programming in Director.
WAR PIGS
http://vispo.com/vismu/warpigs/warpigs8.htm (incomplete as of this writing)
The Black Sabbath song from the seventies called "War Pigs" is, arguably,
the most enduringly relevant song they produced. There is never a shortage
of war pigs. I've cut the song into 88 perfect loops. In 'game mode' of this
piece, you click through the loops, trying to make the sound sound
continuous. It's a different way to experience a piece of music. In 'play
mode', you record and save compositions based on "War Pigs". And can upload
these to the Net to share with others. War Pigs is a protest against the
sort of militaristic leadership displayed by George Bush, where he led a
nation to war with false claims of Iraq having weapons of mass destruction.
