Large Screen Interaction in Public Space: TowerTalk and NVOA

Large screens in public space have an outstanding quality as a one-to-many communication device while addressing a relatively small audience in a limited physical space. This makes these screens a prime medium for short-lived interactions between individuals that control the screens and an audience which usually happens to share the same space. But public space also has it challenges in terms of robustness, ease of use, attractiveness, regulations, etc. This talk will present TowerTalk, a 12 story display operated for 3 weeks in Bern as well as NOVA, a 25 m^3 voxel display installed at Zurich’s main station. For both the challenges, the interaction design as well as the lessons learned will be presented.
